According to historical accounts, Augustus had been in poor health for several years before his death. 

He suffered from a combination of illnesses, including diarrhea, dysentery, and heart problems. 

Despite his poor health, Augustus remained mentally sharp and continued to carry out his duties as emperor until the end of his life.

In the days leading up to his death, Augustus called for his closest friends and family, including his wife Livia and his adopted son Tiberius, to come to his bedside. 

He gave them final instructions and advice on how to run the empire after his death.

Augustus' final words were reportedly: "Have I played the part well? Then applaud as I exit." 

He then closed his eyes and passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones.

Augustus' death marked the end of an era in Roman history, and he was remembered as one of the greatest emperors the empire had ever known. 

He was buried in the Mausoleum of Augustus, a grand tomb in Rome that still stands today.
